Holland America Zaandam Drops Multiple Alaska Ports After Propulsion Failure
Zaandam is going nowhere fast. Holland America Line’s MS Zaandam, a Vista-class vessel carrying 1,432 passengers at double occupancy, has suffered a propulsion system failure midway through its Alaska sailing, forcing the ship to overnight in Juneau and cancel scheduled calls at two additional ports as it limps back toward Vancouver. The mechanical issue, which the line has described only as a “propulsion problem,” reduces the vessel’s operating speed and renders it unable to maintain its published itinerary through the Inside Passage.
For passengers currently aboard, this means lost port time in destinations that many booked specifically to visit — and limited recourse beyond onboard credit gestures. For future cruisers, the incident is a reminder that Alaska’s remote itinerary makes mechanical failures logistically costly: there are no dry docks in Juneau, no swap-out vessels sitting in reserve, and the nearest full repair facility is days away in British Columbia. The Zaandam, built in 2000 and last refurbished in 2019, is one of Holland America’s smaller Alaska vessels — a fact that ordinarily appeals to travelers seeking access to narrower fjords and less-crowded anchorages. That same size, however, means fewer redundant propulsion units compared to the line’s larger Pinnacle-class ships.
If you’re booked on an Alaska sailing this season, consider a few practical measures. Purchase travel insurance that covers itinerary disruptions and missed port calls — standard policies often exclude mechanical breakdowns, so read the fine print for “carrier-caused” delays. Pack flexibility into your shore time plans: cruise port excursions in Skagway, Ketchikan, and Juneau can sell out or get reshuffled when ships arrive off-schedule. If your heart is set on a specific port experience — say, dog sledding and gold panning in the Yukon via Skagway — consider booking a round-trip rather than a one-way itinerary; round-trips from Seattle or Vancouver tend to have more buffer in their schedules. Holland America has not yet announced whether subsequent Zaandam sailings will be affected.
